weekend wonders

Our first weekend on the island:
By friday we were all ready to have a night out. A week of classes from 8 am until 10 at night can really wear you out. The girls were excited to take actual showers and put on cute clothes. This conversation was a pretty humorous for the two lone males on the trip. Twelve girls and two boys. Thats our ratio. Despite the extreme gender gap we had a great night! Lots of dancing and interesting conversations with the locals.
Saturday is our free day. No class no provided food. The group split up, six went windsurfing and tanning in the south of the island and the other eight of us rented scooters and went up north in search of cliff jumping. Lets just say I was not an excellent scooter driver so I got demoted to GoPro girl. But I did do an excellent job picking a scooter, our was the fastest of the gang!

We found the "cliff," on a good day it was probably 25 ft off the water. Nothing like SNP's cliffs but it was fun! we continued our ride making it back to the rental place 3 minutes before it closed. Cant blame us, we're well adjusted to island time.
Sunday we went on a field trip to Washington Slagbaai National park. We climbed Bonaire's highest mountain, Brandaris. All 784 feet of it! Small hill compared to the Sierras, but it was still fun and awesome panoramic views of the whole island! Little windy from the top but we could see the whole island. The only dangerous part of the hike were the cacti, jumped out at you, and were not easy to remove!

We went swimming after our super strenuous hike and had our first jellyfish sting of the trip. But she handled it really well, and even got her face painted by the resident Lion Fish Momma.

Today we did two dives after learning to put together our underwater videocamera. First was a research dive where we focused on transect setting and studying reef diversity with the use of quadrants. Best thing about research diving: swimming vertically with my head down. Technique so as not to disturb the corals and to get an accurate reading on the transect. Theres nothing quite like breathing underwater upside down inches from the ocean floor. To top the day off we went snorkeling and saw a spotted eagle ray just a few meters off the shore. Life is beautiful here.
